FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Gruenbaum Research Presents An Innovative New Keyboard,
The Samchillian Tip Tip Tip Cheeepeeeee

See a demo at Booth #1007 at the NAMM show (http://thenammshow.com)
Jan 15-18, 2004 • Anaheim, CA

The Samchillian is a patented keyboard MIDI controller based on changes of pitch, rather than fixed pitches. This design gives the performer the ability to perform extremely quick, rhapsodical lines in any key or scale without having to learn new fingering.

The user is able to select from a number of scales - including microtonal scales - and key signatures. In addition, there is a pattern mode, in which a sequence is recorded in real-time and can then be manually replayed - forwards, backwards or skipping through the sequence as the user desires.

The instrument consists of a computer keyboard, which is strapped around the waist, which plugs into a pedalboard containing the circuitry that generates MIDI information. In its current incarnation, the instrument utilizes an ergonomic computer keyboard made by Kinesis®, which has been extensively modified.

Gruenbaum Research is looking for either a manufacturer interested in producing the device, or in licensing the unique patented algorithm for use with a keyboard product. In addition, in January, Gruenbaum Research will release various versions of the product for use with home computers.

Features:

- unique "relativistic" concept allows improvisational flurries. an entire scale can be played with one key
- 10 scales, including microtonal, with chromatic shift and chromatic step
- 12 relative transpositions
- pattern ("tone row") mode: allows user to play a set of non-repeating notes in and then play them back in various ways
- chord mode: fixed harmonies play with each note
- voltage control pedal
- internal lo-fi sine tone -"native samchillian sound". (pitch affected by control pedal)
- pedalboard stores 'samchillian patches', with such information as scale and key, starting note, etc.
- pedalboard also stores patch changes.
- optimized for live peformance: extensive song and set mode operation
- lightweight keyboard straps on for mobility on stage
- indicator lights
- endless pitch wheel
- informative LCD display
- load/save internal memory as sysex dump
- works well as keyboard bass
- tested on tours internationally

Leon Gruenbaum, the inventor of this device and a musician himself, has recorded and toured internationally with the Samchillian in his group "Math Camp," as well as in several projects with guitarist Vernon Reid. He graduated with a degree in Mathematics from Harvard University and this year is the Peter Ivers Visiting Artist at Harvard.
