well, not recommends but just happens to be what i am using that appears to work.

Roland GI-20 guitar MIDI interface going through an Edirol UM-1 (USB MIDI is broken) triggering samchillian in relative mode.
A Mac Mini with an apple keyboard.
An ergonomic touchpad.
A Griffin knob that could be used in lieu of the touchpad (but touchpad is better).

i can recommend the Godin LGXT, a nice solid electric guitar with MIDI output. also has magnetic and piezo outputs - all at the same time!

Leon and I use SimpleSynth for debugging, when we want a simple and solid sound reciever and don't want to guess what we've done wrong with Reason or Live :)

These days I'm routing the GI-20 MIDI output into a Native Instruments' Guitar Rig pedalboard. From there MIDI routes into a MacBook via USB. Audio output is also to the pedalboard via USB.
